Thoughts of painting in Spain…

“Villa Azul” Limited Edition Giclee Print by Howard Butterworth

Finding myself thinking of Spain & hopes of warming up, to start my year of painting ; however finding myself in better weather at home!

Forest of Birse Church, through Finzean. Royal Deeside

My habit of starting the year with painting outside in blue skies, heat & with almond blossom has typically broken my January blues, however the light level over the past week at home has triggered me into action, despite it still being a bit cold.

So, whilst contemplating a trip to Spain, I find myself studying the weather reports, news and supermarkets!

Yes, I have found that the Norfolk Savoy Cabbage is still available, whilst the Spanish Courgettes are now not to be found locally.

These unexpected changes are keeping me home as I don’t think the art market is quiet ready to believe snow covered palm trees and beaches. Instead, the blues skies and frosted landscape of Royal Deeside is more believable and attractive.

Over the next few weeks I will continue my contemplation of my pros & cons. In the meantime you may see me out and about in my Hilltrek red jacket!

Christmas Greetings.

‘River Dee in November’

Headlines

‘Storm Frank’ devastated many businesses and homes in the Deeside valley in December. Royal Deeside is a wonderful place, especially Ballater, which I’ve called home for more than thirty years; so to show support and aid the raising of relief funds for people and businesses who have been deeply affected, I’m donating “November at Bobbie’s Pool” a painting of the River Dee completed in 2006.

This painting was originally showcased in an exhibition of mine at the ‘Marcliffe at Pitfodels’ to support The River Dee Trust. The exhibition was successful in raising a substantial amount of money. This painting has been in my private collection since, but I’m now hopeful that it will help raise the necessary funds to enable the local community to rebuild the areas affected  by Storm Frank and I’m happy to see that the community spirit is already shining bright, with lots of work and refurbishments already underway.

“November at Bobbie’s Pool” will be auctioned at the Victory and Albert Halls at the Ballater and Deeside  Flood Fundraising Event, on Saturday the 6th February from 7pm. Although tickets have sold out the organisers and Butterworth Gallery are taking bids until 5pm on Friday 5th February for more details contact Sarah@butterworthpaintings.co.uk or Tel: 013398 86104.

By doing so it is important to note, that I am not in any way taking sides, but through my paint, palette and board depicting an image of the current crisis on-going in Syria, the Mediterranean and Europe.

Howard has travelled across Scotland painting landscape scenes of joyous splendour, endeavouring to encapsulate some of the best views and places on his travels. He has met some wonderful people who have joined him on location; taking part in paint along sessions, enjoying watching an artist at work and also having the opportunity to ask questions and meet the man behind the paintings.

In celebration of the campaign’s completion and with true artistic flair an exhibition will be held at The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa, Aberdeen on Wednesday 28th October, entitled “Howard Butterworth, Painting in Fresh Air”, hosted by sponsor Mr Stewart Spence.  All twelve canvases from the last six months will be on display to the public between 12pm – 3pm culminating in an auction of work later that evening.
